<image:title>2017 | Exhibitions + Events - ABSOLUTE MAYHEM Mitch Walder</image:title>
<image:caption>Absolute Mayhem is the third solo exhibition by Melbourne based artist Mitch Walder. Opening at BSIDE Gallery on Friday May 19th 2017, the show revolves around an intense centrepiece that consists of 29 individual artworks and stands at 3 metres. The works are displayed side by side creating an overall scene of chaos that structures around a central - unarticulated by outline - area that assumes a path to a white unknown. Thematic tendencies in palette & layout bring this painterly mess into a somewhat ordered chaos. Absolute Mayhem runs from 19-28 May, join us on Friday the 19th from 6-9pm for opening night drinks, supported by Young Henrys and 42 Below.</image:caption>

<image:title>2017 | Exhibitions + Events - SURFACE TENSION Silk Roy</image:title>
<image:caption>Celebrating over a decade of creativity, Melbourne artist Silk Roy brings his very first solo show Surface Tension, to BSIDE Gallery in Fitzroy. Inspired by Melbourne's historical heritage, Silk Roy equally embraces our modern, creative metropolis by imbuing temporary, surficial compositions with his foundational graffiti ethos. Having in recent years successfully transitioned his spray painted aesthetic into the emotic realm of abstract expressionism, Silk Roy's obsession with style has, over time, evolved his work to laconically embrace the global Graffuturism movement, whilst still retaining its own individualistic flourish. Join Silk Roy at the opening of Surface Tension at BSIDE Gallery, 121 Brunswick St, Fitzroy. The show opens Friday 23rd June from 6pm to 9pm, and runs until 2nd July 2017.</image:caption>

<image:caption>After 4+ years, the second ever Will Coles solo exhibition comes to Melbourne! UK born sculptor Will Coles’ long awaited follow up show to I Fucking ♥ Melbourne (March, 2013), Fuck Sydney will open this week at BSIDE Gallery, Fitzroy. Fuck Sydney is his ‘it’s not me it’s you’ break-up letter to the city he called home for 20 years: "What was true twenty years ago is just as true today: Sydney is where the money is, Melbourne is where the culture is. Sydney, where the average house will now put you back $1 Million, where they import foreign street art rather than invest in their own. Sydney, where the pubs & clubs close early, live music is a memory & the shops close at 5. Sydney? Go fuck yourself." - Will Coles Join us for the opening of Fuck Sydney on Friday 21st July from 6-9pm at BSIDE Gallery, 121 Brunswick St, Fitzroy. The exhibition opens Friday 21st July from 6-9pm, and runs until the 30th of July 2017. <image:caption>Zero waste. It is an almost inconceivable concept in today’s fast-paced and ultra convenient world. As artists, our works may not be entirely environmentally responsible, and thus, we would like to kick-start a conversation on the idea of disposal culture with the exhibition ‘Disposable’. Pushing the boundaries of traditional illustrative, painting and typographic practices, Primary Arcade’s group exhibition at BSIDE Gallery will explore the disposability of objects in everyday life and the effects of expendable culture on our society. <image:title>2017 | Exhibitions + Events - DIVERGENCE Ben Stoner</image:title>
<image:caption>Divergence is a solo exhibition exploring the human condition by Melbourne based, New Zealand artist, Ben Stoner. Through narrative painting, emotional tension between worlds above and below water are unearthed. Divergence portrays and negotiates human vulnerabilities and hedonistic desires by reimagining natural worlds, accentuated by patterns and simple forms. Although informed from a reflection on personal experiences, the narrative is untethered, allowing the viewer to interpret each painting against their own realities. "Through the combination of representational and stylised form, I aim to distort ones perception to create a new narrative. Reimagining visions of the natural world as patterns and simple forms. Creating visual movement, and allowing the viewer to make their own associations. The narrative is untethered, informed by reflection on past experiences and a desire to create new visual connections." - Ben Stoner Join us for the opening of Divergence at BSIDE Gallery from 6-9pm Friday 6th October, proudly supported by Young Henrys and Bacardi Carta Fuego! This body of work is a journey back in time to Earth’s distant past to understand more about these incredible creatures, but also to focus on recent developments in Palaeontology, as what we know about dinosaurs has drastically changed. Cameron’s new body of work includes paintings, drawings, sculptures and writing inspired by the study of natural history and social issues surrounding science in education.” Mesozoic - Age of Dinosaurs will run from Wednesday 25th - Sunday 29th of October.</image:caption>

<image:caption>In the immortal words of Donald Rumsfeld: “...as we know, there are known knowns; there are things we know we know. We also know there are known unknowns; that is to say we know there are some things we do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns – the ones we don't know we don't know.” Origin is a body of work exploring the known and the unknown, utilising spontaneous abstract mark-making and realistic representation to analyse the building blocks of creativity, and the underlying structures of cultural influence. What are the influential and subconscious aspects of originality? Are animals our slaves or part of our greater symbiotic selves? Can we find beauty in ugliness? How can we be considered individuals if our minds are a product of thousands of years of physical and cultural evolution? Oln-y aims to explore these types of contradictions with an open mind and see the job of an artist as a neo-shaman, attempting to communicate the unknown unknowns. Join us for the opening of Oln-y's debut solo exhibition Origin this Friday 10th November from 6-9pm at BSIDE Gallery, 121 Brunswick St, Fitzroy. Proudly sponsored by Gage Roads Brewing Co! The exhibition will run from the 8th - 19th November 2017. For any sales enquiries please contact Gallery Manager Ariana Leane - info@bsidegallery.com</image:caption>

<image:title>2017 | Exhibitions + Events - AWKWARD FOOD Elizaveta Maltseva</image:title>
<image:caption>Awkward Food is a humorous and semi-autobiographical exploration of Melbourne-based artist Elizaveta Maltseva’s cultural identity and heritage through food and dining. On the surface the exhibition comically toys with ideas of growing up as a weird ethnic kid – in this case, a Russian one. On a deeper level, Awkward Food talks about sharing meals as a gateway to greater cultural understanding and human connections. Elizaveta presents complex and awkward narratives through whimsical drawings and grungy monoprints. While the photographs are at times nostalgic in aesthetic, the drawn and textual elements are more cathartic in nature. Elizaveta’s personal Russian heritage is incidental, as the scenarios presented are relatable to all new Australians and those who have experienced life as a cultural minority. Essentially, she aims to capture the idea that sharing culinary experience and meals is a fundamental part of cultural diplomacy and greater multicultural understanding. Join us for the opening of Awkward Food from 6-9pm on Friday 24th November at BSIDE Gallery, 121 Brunswick St, Fitzroy. Proudly supported by Young Henrys Awkward Food will run from Wednesday 22nd November - Sunday 3rd December 2017</image:caption>

<image:title>2018 | Exhibitions + Events - CREEPING BLACK Jaspor Slim</image:title>
<image:caption>Creeping Black is a collection of images that come from the dark zone of artist Jaspor Slim’s mind. At the core of the work is a nightmarish premonition of the end of a world. The pieces drift in and out from fleeting, enigmatic symbols that exist within our invisible landscape, to daemonic visitations that act as warning signs. Blending different elements of folklore, sci-fi and psychedelia, Slim hopes to draw the viewer’s focus to the muted concern of our impact on our surroundings. The pursuit of happiness over all emotional realms has been a catalyst for the growing disconnection between ourselves and our planet. Systemic and personal greed suffocate our ecosystem and violate all life, leaving it in peril. Although our relationship with Earth has become more parasitical, it still has the potential to be symbiotic. This collection of works by Jaspor Slim illustrates the urgent need for a paradigm shift. Join us for the opening of Creeping Black from 6-9pm on Friday 19th January 2018, proudly supported by Young Henrys!</image:caption>

<image:title>2018 | Exhibitions + Events - A LITTLE BIT OLDER New art by a group of gal pals</image:title>
<image:caption>"We are a little bit older, hopefully stronger, wiser, smarter... more smart? Well, a little bit smarter. Ten female, twenty-something year old artists (and whatever else we are calling ourselves nowadays) met in 2012 to study Fine Art at the Victorian College of the Arts. Each of us excited, ambitious & reasonably nervous studied together for three years then graduated. Now three years since graduating we're collecting our thoughts and works, and like an art school "group tute" we present to one another as well as an audience what our art looks like now, and what conceptually drives our practices." - Tegan Iversen (Curator) Featuring artworks by: Anni Ruuskanen | April JY Kim | Cassandra Martin | Courtney Price | Freya Alexander Hayley Martin | Holly Gregory Jess Milne | Phoebe Beard | Tegan Iversen Join us at BSIDE Gallery for the opening night from 6-9pm on Friday 2nd February 2018, sponsored by Gage Roads Brewing Co! <image:title>2018 | Exhibitions + Events - IT'S JUST A RIDE Juan Rodriguez</image:title>
<image:caption>Argentinian born, Melbourne based artist Juan Rodriguez Cuberes works with the control of a tattoo artist. But rather than wielding the pulses of an electromagnetic pen, his works take shape through the force, patience and coordination of his own vision and a felt tip pen. What begin as singular indelible atoms, the artworks mutate over the course of weeks into his own reflections of mortal symbology, nature and music culture. Each of the works in Juan’s latest series celebrate the wild rides of life on canvas - not of flesh, but of wooden skateboard decks. Join us for the opening of It's Just a Ride from 6-9pm on Friday 16th February, proudly supported by Young Henrys! The exhibition runs from Wednesday 14th - Sunday 18th February 2018. <image:title>2018 | Exhibitions + Events - POST MODERN LIFE Glen Downey (Crisis)</image:title>
<image:caption>A busy 2017 saw Glen Downey, who you may already be familiar with as CRISIS, working hard all over the east coast of Australia. Debuting at Melbourne’s BSIDE Gallery, and further developed later at Brisbane’s Culprit Club, Glen executed two highly successful solo exhibitions titled Ultra High Frequency (UHF), his crowd-sourced, live-process concept bringing the random input and suggestion from onlookers and followers to life into original artwork. Returning to base at Melbourne’s irrepressible Arts Hole Studio during February, Glen turned off the time-lapse camera and went radio silent on the process to look inward for his latest solo show, Post Modern Life. Post Modern Life looks at tradition and the ravenous culture of nostalgia as the foundation for modern expression. From the natural world to the Mushroom Kingdom, from ancient history to afternoon cartoons, we appropriate the familiar and rearrange it in new and unexpected ways as a lens to observe the world and exchange ideas with one another. Post Modern Life takes this as the literal basis for its creative process, where influence, memory and nostalgia break down into a pulp that emerges as new expressions and observations of culture, life and the world. Each piece is executed on Dodgy Paper™ custom made from the pulp of Glen's early creative influences and each composition draws from the pulp, pop culture, history and the natural world reimagined into a fresh view of the world today. Join us for the opening of Post Modern Life from 6-9pm on Friday 16th March, proudly supported by Young Henrys & 42 Below! The exhibition runs from the 16th - 25th of March, for sales enquiries please contact Gallery Manager Ariana Leane - info@bsidegallery.com</image:caption>

<image:title>2018 | Exhibitions + Events - MOMENTUM Alexandra Lederman</image:title>
<image:caption>"These roads have a defined direction of moving forward. To think about stopping or turning around on these roads seems unnatural. They have momentum and energy, yet they are contained and guarded by their surroundings. These roads are a visual representation of my mind. It can feel intimidating when thoughts are in a constant state of flux and a direction is sometimes un-clear. However, being able to take notice of the surrounding landscape, which protects and contains this moving path, can lead to feelings of control and safety. The ability to explore, change, move, guess and grow, while knowing that you are protected. You can choose to be the driver, or a passenger on these roads. You can choose your direction or you can sit back and let things happen. The physical sensation of painting the road's movement acts as a tool for me to release thoughts or energy. The process of painting the surroundings help me to frame those thoughts and store them in an organised file. This series has been influenced by Dr. Seuss- 'Oh, the Places You'll Go.'" - Alexandra Lederman Join us from 6-9pm on Friday 30th March (Good Friday) for the opening of Alexandra Lederman's latest solo exhibition Momentum, proudly sponsored by Gage Roads Brewing Co! <image:title>2018 | Exhibitions + Events - UNDERCURRENT II Curated by Heesco & Silk Roy</image:title>
<image:caption>Co-curated by Heesco & Sahil Silk Roy, Undercurrent II continues to seek out artists whose work challenges the norms of today's urban art realm. "This is not a visually cohesive show - it is not about the finished artworks. Instead, it is about the creative process behind each of the works, it is about the studio practice of each artists, the solitary act of painting a canvas, and the thoughts and attitudes that form the conceptual link between each works. It is about establishing and defining a particular aesthetic, our ‘outsider’ approach to painting and art-making, independent from the popular paradigms. Paintings are a product of a long process of problem-solving and decision-making. It is a visual language between the artist and the viewer, its vocabulary can vary from the simplest to the utmost complex, and the longer you keep up the conversation, the richer and more meaningful it becomes. Often minute and nuanced details emerge to take up important roles to shift and influence the very meaning behind the work itself. However, it is up to the participants, the artist and the viewers, to choose what level they wish to engage in. And to me, it is quite important to initiate such discourses which allow us to discover each other, share our ideas, knowledge and experiences. It helps us to create an environment where ideas can be nurtured and allowed to grow and progress through collective input and discussions. It ultimately helps us develop and refine our core values and establish the essential truths of our art practices as a community." - Heesco Featuring works by: Bailer | Conrad Bizjak | Craig Cole | Dvate | Goodie | Christopher Hancock | Heesco | James Wilson | Ling | Makatron | Putos | Seb Fransz | Silk Roy Join us for the opening on Friday the 13th from 6-9pm, proudly supported by Young Henrys! <image:title>2018 | Exhibitions + Events - POINTS OF CONTACT Joshua Thomas</image:title>
<image:caption>Points of Contact presents a series of large black and white photographs depicting a distant and unresolved relationship between father and son, and the search for closure and rekindling. In this exhibition project, Joshua Thomas explores the relationship between his father as a fighter and himself as an artist, photographing his sport as their shared communicative bond. His aim is to document the strong systemically implied values of traditional masculinity that many men abide by within their sport. This shared concept feeds into impressionable youth who look up to the older male figure, as they might a father, and adopt their values in order to please them. Accompanying the large black and photos are a number of found photographs that have been given a new appropriation, aiding to the idea of complex relationships and the concept of ‘The Father’s Wound’ – the idea of an individual identifying with a certain mentally straining emotion when reflecting on one’s own father and son relationship. Describing his work, Joshua Thomas says: “I aim to draw out the complicated issues regarding a father and son’s relationship highlighting that there has been a long systematically inclined distance between them. The work’s intentions are to create a discussion on the idea of fatherhood in contemporary society, that there are more unique identities to be analysed within parenting than just what we are typically fed through mainstream media.” Joshua Thomas is a recent graduate in photography and graphic design, with honours in photography, from the School of Communication and Creative Industries at Charles Sturt University. He was a finalist in the 2016 Sony World Photography Awards, exhibited in Germany and UK; and has also exhibited in photographic prizes at the Murray Art Museum Albury (MAMA) and Hazelhurst Regional Gallery in Sydney. <image:caption>‘The most valuable lesson my father taught me was to know when to walk, and when to clench both fists.’ Proudly presenting his debut solo show Adherence, Melbourne-based artist Dose explores a culture, people, and the evident blurred lines which orbit his world. Dose provides the viewer with an opportunity to experience his current environment in which remaining adherent becomes increasingly more paramount. Comprising of four tangible series of works utilising mixed media approaches on a multitude of surfaces, Adherence draws definitions between graffiti and art, required sub-cultural errands, anecdotal relationships, and an ode to a youthful memory. Opening Friday 22nd June 6-9pm, BSIDE Gallery, proudly supported by Young Henrys, Ironlak, Union Heights, Boywolf, Dodgy Paper & Rush Photography. Exhibition open for viewing Friday 22nd - Sunday 24th of June About Dose Having been based in Melbourne for the majority of his creative career, Dose has focused on providing technically sound and challenging works to the city's surfaces, whilst developing suited studio based practices. <image:title>2018 | Exhibitions + Events - SPEAK ON IT</image:title>
<image:caption>Speak On It is a new gathering that offers a supportive and safe space for artists to come together to discuss mental health through Hip Hop (rap or singing) and Spoken Word Poetry. This is a not-for-profit community event that encourages artists to get deep and share what's on their mind and listen to likeminded people. This event hopes to recognise and share the similarities in our struggles and destigmatise mental health issues in our community. Sharing of helpful resources and strategies to deal with depression, anxiety and other mental health issues is also very welcome. We need to know and tell each other we are not alone. There is no doubt that many of us suffer from mental health issues or have experienced low points in our life where we could use some help. There has never been a better time to come together to support each other. Let's face it, winter is a bitch. Come along and eat snacks, be warm and be good to each other. <image:title>2018 | Exhibitions + Events - WE CAN FLY TO THE SUN Nate Harrison</image:title>
<image:caption>Nate Harrison's We Can Fly to the Sun is a window into warmer climates, unknown language, notions of paradise and our need for escapism. Inspired by old travel ads and vintage comic books, the artworks are brought to life using recycled cardboard, image transfer techniques, acrylic and spray paint, and the artist’s self-made, hand-drawn script. Join us for the opening of We Can Fly To The Sun from 6-9pm on Friday 21st September, proudly supported by Gage Roads Brewing Co! About the artist: Originally from the U.S., Nate Harrison has called Melbourne home for over ten years. He’s long been inspired by a love of comics, calligraphy, and print making. At university he started painting on cardboard due to not having much money for canvases but grew to love its texture and versatility. His art has ventured into many subjects, but his most recent works have been inspired by escapism and exotic locales, both real and imaginary - possibly due to being born in Kansas.</image:caption>

<image:title>2018 | Exhibitions + Events - DECKS FOR CHANGE WORKSHOP</image:title>
<image:caption>Join Decks for Change and Melbourne artist Carla Scotto for an evening of radness, connection and creation. We'll hook you up with a refurbished skate deck (with over 2 million decks going to landfill each year, we like to upcycle), all art materials and social lubricants (yay!) as your guided by the Decks for Change crew and talented Carla to create your very own masterpiece. Who are Decks for Change ? Decks for Change is organisation that believes skateboarding has the ability to save and change lives. The beautiful thing about skateboarding and one of the most valuable impacts in developing communities is that if you skate and you see another person skateboarding, you don't see colour, gender, income level, you just see someone that has the same mindset as you that you can share the stoke with. We help to create skateparks and youth skate programs where it's needed most. Currently, all funds raised go toward supporting youth skate programs in Suli, Iraq.</image:caption>

<image:title>2018 | Exhibitions + Events - THREADED Alina Zorkina</image:title>
<image:caption>Come and celebrate a journey through the relationships of the unique textiles created and worn by women of the world. No matter how different a culture, worldwide we find that women are the fabric of society. Woven and threaded, holding together and uplifting the people. Painted by Alina Zorkina for her first solo exhibition this will be a unique perspective as Alina herself is a Ukrainian immigrant who moved to Australia 12 years ago. She has also travelled abroad since moving to Australia and has met with and interacted with the huge multicultural communities here in Melbourne. Over this time she has seen how women wearing their traditional dress is a foundation of any culture worldwide, whether in their land of origin or resettled abroad. Join us for the opening of Threaded from 6-9pm on Friday the 5th of October, proudly supported by Gage Roads Brewing Co! The exhibition is open for viewing from the 3rd - 7th of October, for any enquiries please contact info@bsidegallery.com</image:caption>

<image:title>2018 | Exhibitions + Events - NOTHING BUT LOVE TUYULOVEME</image:title>
<image:caption>“Passion, devotion and unbridled attraction; Tuyuloveme talks about the nature of his love and relationship with the streets. The late nights, long quiet strolls through the thoroughfare. Appreciating, learning and getting to know each other, day after day, year after year, time after time. Born not out of the need for the destruction but out of a deep-seated curiosity and need to express. From Yogyakarta, to Moscow to Melbourne and many streets more, Tuyuloveme looks back on the constant in his journey of life, both personally and artistically. Intrinsically connected and intimately informed by his kinship with the streets, alluring and delicate at times, tumultuous and boisterous otherwise, Tuyuloveme looks back into this journey through his art framed with 'Nothing But Love'. Unrestrained and unchecked." ZERO Founder of RSCLS Art Collective ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Tuyuloveme is an Indonesian artist who began his artistic practice on the streets of Yogyakarta creating work in between the art and graffiti aesthetic. Although not a native of Yogyakarta, he has been a resident for couple of years as a base for him to do creative work while working with his national and international network. Tuyuloveme has been painting his unique style religiously on the streets for over 10 years. His paintings represent an alter-ego, a self-portrait of sorts, popping up on walls and street corners all over the world. His visual style is a juxtaposition of organised, expressive and chaotic expulsion; a contrast to his personality in real life. You may find this artistic works in the walls or corner of streets in major cities all over Indonesia, Asia, Europe and Australia. His career has been nourished and influenced by extensive travels and an ability to work and collaborate with other artists. Tuyuloveme has been featured in a number of national and international group exhibitions, and is proud to present his first solo exhibition outside of Indonesia, Nothing But Love at BSIDE Gallery in Melbourne, Australia. Join us for the opening of 'Nothing But Love' from 6-9pm on Friday 26th October at BSIDE Gallery proudly supported by Ironlak, Young Henrys,Royal Jamaican Ginger Beer, Mortimers Orchard at Taste London, Easey's, Fazzari Multimedia, Nathan Ctc, Dodgy Paper & Arterior Australia! <image:title>2018 | Exhibitions + Events - LOW RES REACTIONS James Wilson</image:title>
<image:caption>A solo exhibition of James Wilson's latest stencil series. We exist in a time where we experience life through our devices and are constantly being overloaded by visual stimuli. Instead of slowing down and taking the time to ponder the details, we move at a rapid pace from one thing to the next. For something to capture our attention it needs to be easily digestible and quick to the point. Using paint on canvas to explore the world through a ‘pixelated lens’, Wilson evokes childhood nostalgia through the low-res computer graphics of the late 90’s. His works are self-aware and playful, like the tongue in cheek jabs at the fatherless Batman and Darth Vader in offbrand bootlegs. Wilson also comments on art history and the way our consumption of media has changed. His reinterpretations of classic artworks focus not just on the pieces themselves, but also on how the way we now view those pieces has changed. Join us for the opening of Low Res Reactions from 6pm on Friday 9th November at BSIDE Gallery, proudly supported by Young Henrys! <image:title>2018 | Exhibitions + Events - LEXICAL: A SURVEY OF ARTWORK BY KIM SALMON Curated by Charity Bramwell</image:title>
<image:caption>Curated by Charity Bramwell in collaboration with Kim Salmon Opening Night: Wednesday, 21 November, 6-9pm Exhibition: 22-25 November 2018 BSIDE Gallery, 121 Brunswick Street, Fitzroy, VIC Best known as seminal Australian singer, songwriter and guitarist, Kim Salmon is also a visual artist, poet and narrative performer. To coincide with Melbourne Music Week, 'Lexical (a survey of artwork by Kim Salmon)', lifts the veil on Salmon's visual art practice - honed behind the scenes over four decades since officially declaring himself an art school drop out. 'Lexical' refers to Salmon's vocabulary of visual tricks, marks and symbols that render visual scenarios, which in turn suggest or spell out narratives about objects, places and people. The process of recording and rendering visual cues as recognisable images is Salmon's method of making sense of the world, engaging with it and exerting agency in it. LEXICAL is supported by the City of Yarra Small Projects Grant program. The organisers gratefully acknowledge Murray Bramwell, Peter Bramwell and Lisa Mansfield for their additional support. Special thanks to Joy & Owen Salmon, and Eileen Thewlis for the loan of artworks from their private collections for inclusion in this exhibition.</image:caption>

<image:title>2018 | Exhibitions + Events - SREATHAN: ONE LINEAR TAKE Miwaut X Rudog</image:title>
<image:caption>A look into chaotic scenes and disillusioned characters "Through my practice I’ve always been interested in the exploration of basic human emotions, adding abstract and figurative elements together in order to create intriguing and introverted characters and scenes at the brink of chaos. Featuring unrelenting people and expressions, the majority of these characters, landscapes and situations are inspired by people, scenes and places I see or visit. For this exhibition, I wanted to combine fluid painting influences in order to fully give the pieces a multidimensional texture. These paintings are almost a continuation of my notebook/sketch based work as I translate different ideas/styles on to bigger and larger mediums without compromising the initial sketched out feeling and freedom a sheet of paper gives you. Through the practice of layering, my intention is always to push through and combine those thoughts sometimes slightly hidden to the unsuspecting eye…and with the help of a magnifying glass those smaller details come to life…adding texture and depth, making it ever so subdued yet instrumental to appreciating the full meaning of my work." - Nicholas Garcia-Minaur (Miwaut) Join us for the opening of 'Sreathan: One Linear Take' 6pm this Friday 30th November at BSIDE Gallery, proudly supported by Gage Roads Brewing Co!</image:caption>

<image:title>2019 | Exhibitions + Events - TUNE IN TOON OUT EVIL KEANEVIL X CAPER</image:title>
<image:caption>Kicking off BSIDE Gallery's 2019 program we have our studio resident and homie Evil Keanevil joining forces with Caper for a collaborative exhibition filled with colour and nostalgia. Take a trip down memory lane and see iconic cartoon characters recreated in the contemporary styles that both artists have honed over the years, from acrylic paintings and stencils, to intricate woodcuts. Join us for the opening of Tune In Toon Out from 6-9pm this Friday 18th January, proudly supported by Young Henrys! The exhibition runs from Tuesday 15th - Sunday 20th January 2019, for all enquiries please contact the Gallery Manager Ariana - info@bsidegallery.com Exhibition hours: Tuesday 11am - 5pm Wednesday 11am - 5pm Thursday 11am - 5pm Friday 11am - 9pm Saturday 11am - 5pm Sunday 12pm - 4pm Caper Caper has been an active street artist for over 12 years, creating illustrations and paintings that parody mass media and popular culture. His use of multi-layered imagery in his works at times appear idiosyncratic and quirky, whilst acting as typical by-products of American superabundance and marketing. Caper's works are saturated with mental inertia, cliches and bad jokes, and by their nature question the coerciveness of the superficial. Evil Keanevil Evil Keanevil's work is a dynamic and bold exploration of entropy and deconstruction of reality. Pop culture icons, as well as original characters are deconstructed to reveal their core components, usually by liquefying or melting the subject. Questions and themes have risen through the meltingly matter, bubbling through the muck and surfacing in the paintings themselves - which components can be stripped away, and by what measure before the subject becomes unrecognisable? When the subject is melted down, is it their perception of reality being manipulated, or the viewer's?</image:caption>

<image:caption>"Appropriation comes natural to me, my awareness of conventional and pop art reflects into my life creating a space for appropriation and the art of copying. The underlying aspect of "I am not unique within my individuality" John Bauldessari (https://youtu.be/eU7V4GyEuXA) being a major influence, assisting with my structure of non-ground breaking art. My delivery and process of creation is sporadic and fuelled by my mental illness and traumatic past. Evident in my works which you will read soon. I am reaching for the title of "Mistress of Appropriation" My maladaptive personality and artwork conflict together creating a harmonious environment for my expression. <image:title>2019 | Exhibitions + Events - THE BLIND EYE OF THE NEEDLE MONA QUILTY</image:title>
<image:caption>Through manipulation of the animal body, Mona Quilty's work explores the ethical propositions inherent in the human-animal relationship, aiming to question the taxidermic process itself as a means of negating animal agency. When we witness the abject, we are reminded of ourselves. "Within my work, abjection through taxidermy acts as impetus for our repulsion against both the material truths of the body and the fragility of the conscious mind, with death unifying matter and thought as a single system. With this, the animal agent is rendered down to a symbolic vessel, presenting human-centric dilemmas that the artwork itself aims to dispute. This poses a question: How can the art work interrogate the anthropocentric viewpoint when the animal body is used as a vehicle for doing so? With the premise behind my work as contradictory, the taxidermic animal is here as a tool, revelatory through the question of its own creation. The object stares back." -------------------------------------------------------------- Mona Quilty is a second year Sculpture and Spatial Practice student at the VCA. She uses taxidermy and performance as a methodology for her art practice, focusing on the human animal relationship and the moment of encounter. This body of work attempts to recognise our perceptual limitations while addressing our inability to reconcile the unknown. <image:title>2019 | Exhibitions + Events - ABSENT WITHOUT LEAVE John & Viki Murray</image:title>
<image:caption>Absent Without Leave is a collection of works by the Lightning Ridge-based creative duo Viki and John Murray. The collection is the result of spending a two-month summer residence immersed in the street art and multicultural hub of Melbourne. Featuring collaborative and individual works in canvas, wood and found objects, the vibrant pieces are a playful marriage of John’s distinctly honed acrylic brush work and Viki’s monotone figurative stencils. Limited edition prints of public art pieces completed in Fitzroy, Melbourne CBD and East Brunswick in early 2019 will feature as well. As is the transient nature of street art, some of these public works have since disappeared; making them great collectables of a particular time and place. John Murray’s name is now synonymous with outback art, with a career spanning over 35 years. His gallery, established in 1992 in the opal mining township of Lightning Ridge NSW, is well known and highly regarded. The photorealistic landscapes and often quirky depictions of country life and bush humour John creates are celebrated both in Australia and by international collectors. Some of these works feature as public art pieces across NSW, QLD and VIC. In the summer of 2019 John enjoyed collaborating with Melbourne street artist Caper on the BSIDE Gallery walls, and at Grumpy’s ‘Never Faded’ monthly paint jam curated by Shannon Keane. Viki Murray is a Lightning Ridge-based photographer/stencil artist and co-director of John Murray Art Gallery, with a permanent display space in the gallery. Her photo artistry is varied in style and themes and incorporates mediums of sumi ink, paint, and aerosol painted 5-8 layered stencils. Join us for the opening of John & Viki Murray's collaborative exhibition Absent Without Leave from 6pm Friday 16th August, proudly supported by Young Henrys & Haymes Paint! <image:title>2019 | Exhibitions + Events - COLOUR BLIND Solo exhibition by Varun Sinh</image:title>
<image:caption>"Colour Blind" is a collection of recent works by Varun Sinh. The artist's own colour-blindness led him to question the way most of us perceive colour. This exhibition explores the concept of colour as an evolutionary construct; something that is subjectively interpreted by the brain. We naturally assume that what we see is somehow 'correct' and associate meaning behind it. In reality, there are other people, animals, maybe even plants that perceive light and colour very differently. This series of paintings seeks to explore the possibilities of what is actually out there. What if we could see things clearly, free from the limitations of our human capacity? The exhibition contains over 20 large, primarily acrylic on canvas pieces, all created in 2019 during the artist's sabbatical. Varun is based in Brisbane. Originally from India, he moved to Australia as a child and learnt of his colour-blindness when he was 14. This is his second solo exhibition. Join us for the opening of 'Colour Blind' from 6pm on Friday 8th November, proudly supported by Haymes Paint & Gage Roads Brewing Co! The exhibition is open for viewing from Wednesday 6th - Sunday 10th November. For all enquiries please contact the Gallery Manager Ariana Leane via email info@bsidegallery.com</image:caption>

<image:caption>A collection of Annie Foxes work titled 'Connecting Colours'. This exhibition explores human vulnerability and connection, with the art process itself acting as a safe container and connector. Mixed-media portraits, and live music from FOX (at 7pm) is the result of this ongoing exploration. What is it about and why? This exhibition is exploring the containment needed to be vulnerable to strengthen oneself as an individual and as a collective. Annie hopes this exhibition inspires the viewer to engage with their vulnerability within their community. Annie feels this is of particular importance in a world where isolation appears to be on the rise. The people Annie paints are invited to sit for her, share and be vulnerable in a therapeutic and safe place. She tries to capture this vulnerability through the subconscious given expression through idiosyncrasies, exposing truth and beauty. Paralleling and inspired by nature as it dares to show both its strength and fragility simultaneously, creating a compelling vision. In her artworks, Annie attempts to project her minds-eye as it converges with a heightened sense of psyche and reality. But who is she? Annie is a multimedia Artist and Art Psychotherapist.</image:caption>

<image:title>2020 | Exhibitions + Events - HER exhibition + book launch Cihan Bektas</image:title>
<image:caption>BSIDE Gallery proudly presents award-winning photographer Cihan Bektas with his exhibition and book launch 'HER: Volume 2', opening 6pm Friday the 13th of November. "The images of this project are staged recreations of my love's own world. The series aims to show her that I can still see her, even when she's momentarily in a different world. I photographed her with the intention of demonstrating impersonal personality (schizophrenia). This is not only because I wanted to take images that mimic visual memory, but I also wanted the photos to be accessible to the viewer. While photographing with polaroid film, it had the effect of not thinking about freezing or being suspicious that it would be the only one before it disappeared." - Cihan Bektas The exhibition is open for viewing from Wednesday 11th November - Sunday 22nd November.
